Among the best-known standards are Blue Moon (#1), I Only Have Eyes For You (#3), Deep Purple (#7) and I Get a Kick Out of You (#24). Four are by Cole Porter (Nos. 2, 17, 24 and 33) and three by Harold Arlen (Nos. 13, 28, and 31), My three favorites here are Duke Ellington's Solitude (#9), Johnny Green's Easy Come, Easy Go (#14) and East of the Sun (#34). The latter song, written by a Princeton undergraduate named Brooks Bowman for the Triangle show, has become legendary among Princeton alumni groups, and I'm often called upon to play it at gatherings. After graduation, Bowman was offered a contract to compose songs for the movies; but on route to California, he was killed in an automobile accident. What a loss we'll never know what other memorable songs he would have provided us.
