  15. The Way We Were

The title song, Marvin Hamlisch's The Way We Were (#31), from the movie of the same name, is among the ones that have a good lyric (by Alan and Marilyn Bergman). Among singer-songwriters, I'm particularly drawn to Paul Simon and his evocative American Tune (#15), John Denver's tender My Sweet Lady (#11), and Jackson Browne's alluring Jamaica Say You Will (#2). There are three fine show tunes here Charles Strouse's Tomorrow (#30) from "Annie"; Stephen Sondheim's Send in the Clowns (#3) from "A Little Night Music"; and Andrew Lloyd Webber's I Don't Know How to Love Him (#14) from "Jesus Christ Superstar." Other songs I particularly like are Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 23, 25, and 29. Evergreen (#12) is one of my mother's choice numbers, and Billy Joel's Just the Way You Are (#1) is an all-time favorite of my wife, carrying a strong message for enduring relationships.
