The earliest tunes, dating back to the middle ages, include Good King Wenceslas (#42), Lo, How a Rose is Blooming (#9), The Conventry Carol (#37), and Good Christian Men, Rejoice (#25). Felix Mendelsohn wrote Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (#2); and the English versions of O Little Town of Bethlehem (#45) and It Came Upon a Midnight Clear (#13) were composed by Vaghan Williams and Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), respectively. Among the lesser known carols on the album, some of my personal favorites are Nos. 8, 16, 18, 31, 40, 46, 48, 54, and best of all, In the Bleak Midwinter (#3). |
